Jumpscare Sound Effects is a free collection of jumpscare sounds and cinematic impact sounds for modern film scoring created by Alessandro Alcinesio, aka HAL9K.

The free download link is located at the end of this article.

    Free Jumpscare Sounds

The library contains 50 high-quality jumpscare sound effects and cinematic impacts with long release tails, ranging from classic sonic booms to eerie horror noises and spooky SFX.

Alessandro has done a fantastic job with Rumore Cinematic Impacts, creating an incredibly diverse sample collection while maintaining the same level of production quality with all included sounds.

For creating the included jumpscare sounds, Alessandro combined musical elements from normal musical instruments (like percussion instruments, pianos, guitars, and others), industrial and atonal elements (metal hits, wood hits, etc.), synthesized elements (especially basses), and sometimes nasty noises made with noise generators (like Skrewell for Native Instruments Reaktor).

Many different plugins were used for post-processing, most of them free, like Boscomac’s free tools for NI Reaktor.

    What are Jumpscare Sound Effects?

Jumpscare sounds are sound effects used in film, television, and video production to underscore and emphasize a dramatic moment or event. These sounds might occur when something dramatic, surprising, or critical happens in a scene.

Jumpscare sounds are meant to startle and frighten the audience in movies, video games, and other forms of entertainment. They are strategically placed during suspenseful moments or sudden dramatic scenes to elicit a heightened emotional response from viewers or players.

Common examples of jumpscare sound effects include sharp, loud noises like piercing screams, jarring stingers, sudden bursts of music, or eerie whispers that catch the audience off guard.

For example, the sudden, deep “boom” accompanying a surprise reveal or the crash of an object when a villain appears are examples of jumpscare SFX.

The library also includes cinematic impacts. Imagine a scene where two large spaceships collide in an epic scene. This type of scene would typically feature an impact sound effect to enhance the explosion and make it sound bigger than in real life.

    How to use Jumpscare Sounds?

When used effectively, jumpscare sound effects can intensify the atmosphere of horror, suspense, or surprise in a video. The trick is to use proper timing and not overdo the number of jumpscares in your video.

The best way to use them is to strategically place a jumpscare sound right after a buildup of suspense.  Excessive or predictable jumpscare sound effects may lead to desensitization and decrease the impact on the audience.

You can pair these free jumpscare sounds with our cinematic sound effects and Halloween sound effects collections. You can

Our free jumpscares are royalty-free and ready to use in your favorite video editor or digital audio workstation.
