Hands Make Sounds (Free Sample Pack)

Hands Make Sounds is a free sound library featuring 158 samples of hand claps and finger snaps. The  sounds were recorded in six different indoor locations with the goal of capturing their natural reverb characteristics. The result is a detailed and diverse collection of natural sounding hand made percussion sounds.

I have many electronic clap sounds on my computer, but good sounding natural claps are a bit harder to find. This free collection should remedy the situation, packing over 150 different real life snaps and claps.

The Claps

The clap samples have been recorded in six different rooms, from a tiny toilet to a large empty hallway. Although you’re free to add your own reverb to these sounds of course, it’s often nice to have percussion samples which already capture the natural reverb characteristics of different rooms.

Although sitting alone in a toilet and clapping into a microphone isn’t exactly the best way to spend a day, I’m really happy with how those samples turned out. The claps which were recorded in the empty hallway in front of my apartment also sound nice and they work great when layered on top of classic 808 snares.

But that’s not all! The library was created in collaboration with Cy Brazanthr, a music producer and sound designer who is also known under the artist name Girls With Depression. He has provided some unusually cool gang claps and processed finger snaps. Some of my favorite sounds in the library are his lovely lo-fi clap samples which have been recorded with a laptop microphone. They sound very digital, but in a nice crunchy way.

The Snaps

The snap samples are sorted into four different groups. The samples labeled snap-close have been recorded from close range, with almost zero reverb. The ones labeled snap-far have been recorded in my living room, from various distances. Samples labeled snap-slow and snap-stacked are more digital sounding. Cy has pitched down some of them, to achieve a crunchier sound.

Most of the snaps have been recorded with both hands at the same time, in order to achieve that classic musical finger snap sound. I’ve tried to keep my hands apart as much as possible, which resulted in a nice stereo separation in the majority of the sounds.

By the way, you should also check out our Rain And Thunder sound library if you’re looking for free thunderstorm sound effects. It features more than 600 MB of high quality loops of rainfall and thunder strikes.

Technical Details

All samples have been normalized to -0.1 dB and carefully trimmed to avoid any pops or clicks. My advice is to use several similar clap or snap samples in a round robin fashion in order to achieve more natural results. You can also make some great sounding fat claps if you layer several different clap samples and trigger them at the same time.

The samples are provided in stereo 24-bit WAV format with 44.1 kHz sampling rate. The library contains 158 individual samples. You’ll find 96 clap samples and 62 finger snaps. SFZ and Kontakt 5 mappings included. After unpacking, the library will occupy 19.6 MB of space on your hard drive.

LICENSE

The included samples are provided free of charge. You can use them for free in your music, as well as audio and video projects. The sounds included in the library may not be re-distributed. You are not allowed to use them as the source material for another sound library or virtual instrument.

Hi kanz. The download is a simple RAR archive with the samples and the patches:

What exactly are you referring to?

Genio automatically gets downloaded to you computer when you hit that download button. In some cases, like mine, malware gets installed to your computer. It happened to me. Its just a word of caution. Safe Mac has all the info there. I’m just weary, and watch what I download. Its great that your offering these samples, but why do I have to deal with Genio at all. I don’t want it on my computer. Just my two cents worth. Maybe I’m wrong. Thanks

          The big black DOWNLOAD button?

Sorry, but the button is linked to the RAR archive with the samples. There’s absolutely no way that it installs anything on your computer.

I’m sorry for any trouble you’ve had, but I can’t understand what happened there. The button simply links to the download pack, I’ve made it that way and it works that way. I’ve re-checked it and it’s absolutely working fine.

I’ve been recording my own claps for years, but to now have this amount of claps and snaps, I think I’m good for the next few years looking for claps/snaps.

The samples are available in WAV format so they’re definitely compatible with Logic X.

Hi Bryce! You should get a file named euqj.zip. Extract the ZIP archive and then extract the RAR archive. You should be able to do this with any freeware utility such as 7ZIP or PeaZIP.

Let me know how it goes!

I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but that’s due to a problem with our file hosting service. I’ll switch to a new host this week.
