Drones is a freely downloadable, royalty free collection of drone sound effects and atmospheric soundscapes crafted by Red Fog. Designed to launch your sound system into outer space and take you on a mysterious journey towards unexplored galaxies, Drones is a must-have sound library for any soundscape aficionado.
The author describes Drones as a sound library that’s not necessarily gritty or industrial, but rather oriented towards atmospheric and ambient textures. It works beautifully in tandem with some of our previous releases such as the Magnetic Fields library by Matt Bowdler and InterSpace by Johan Ekelove.
About The Author
Red Fog is a drone/ambient artist whose music focuses mostly on drones, atmospheric soundscapes and dark ambiances. No beats, no rhythm, just pure drones and textures. You can follow Red Fog’s work on his SoundCloud profile, as well as his Bandcamp page.

99Sounds: Hi Red Fog, thanks so much for releasing Drones on 99Sounds! Can you tell us a bit more about the tools you’ve used to create these sounds?
Red Fog: Well, thank you for having me on board for this sample pack, I really had fun designing the sounds. All the sounds in this library, like all of my music as a matter of fact, have been created with digital tools only. No analog synthesizers nor samplers, no hardware effects, purely digital tools on a computer. All the sounds were created using granular synthesis, spectral re-synthesis and a wide range of exotic effects like spectral / FFT processing, stretching, convolution, cross-synthesis, morphing and granulation. I did this with a variety of tools, but I mostly used MaxMSP, MetaSynth and Ableton Live as a DAW to polish the sounds. A good friend of mine also has the almighty Kyma Paca System that I can use from time to time in his studio, so some of the sounds were created with that as well. The sources of the sounds are often coming from field recordings of all sorts (I use a Roland Edirol recorder) and then deeply and intensely transformed, manipulated and mutated beyond total recognition. This is what I’m really interested into, transforming a sound into something totally different and giving it a brand new identity. Possibilities are then endless.
99Sounds: What is your biggest source of inspiration when creating sounds such as the ones included in this release. Do you imagine the sounds being used on the big screen, music projects, or something else?
Red Fog: Of course, I really hope the sounds are going to inspire other artists and sound designers in their work, no matter where and how they gonna use them. That was my main goal with this project. So I would say that my biggest source of inspiration was to give inspiration to others. Inspire them to not only use the sounds, but also to explore further more with them, transform them even more deeply and use them as a source of creativity. In the end, if the sounds are used for music, a soundtrack for a film, a commercial, or anything else, I will be happy and my mission will be completed.
99Sounds: Do you have a favorite movie soundtrack and is there any particular movie which impressed you with its sound design and the sound effects used in it?
Red Fog: I’m a huge movie buff, I love cinema. Most people don’t realize it, but you can seriously damage – or greatly improve! – a film with the sound design. So movies are a huge source of inspiration for me. And yes, I often end up in my home studio late at night, creating sounds after watching a movie I enjoyed… Over the years, I was impressed by the sound design of many movies I’ve watched. But more recently, in term of sound design and aural atmospheres, I’ve been really impressed by The Revenant, which has a very ambient and atmospheric soundtrack. The overall sound design in Gravity was also truly amazing and engulfing. I also really enjoyed the dreadful and dark atmospheric sound design of Beyond The Black Rainbow. Now, if we go back in time with older films, I think David Lynch’s 1977 Eraserhead has one of the most effective, gritty and dark sound designs ever created in a movie. The 1979 movie Stalker from Andrei Tarkovsky also has a fascinating and strange sound design that perfectly fits the desolation of the film. Those are just a few, though. I could really go on for hours…
99Sounds: What is your favorite sound design tool and do you have any specific secret techniques you’d like to share?
Red Fog: Since I use a lot MaxMSP, I would say it’s probably my favorite tool, although I do try to discover new techniques and obscure tools all the time. I unfortunately don’t have a secret technique to share. Not that I don’t want to share my sound design secrets, it’s simply because I don’t really have any. I love sound experiments, I can spend hours just experimenting and applying all sorts of different things to a sound. As I said earlier, the possibilities are near limitless with modern digital processing tools… I always try to explore new avenues and try new things and techniques, such as applying an effect as simple as a filter, but in a way I haven’t tried before, leading to something new. Also, I’ve just very recently discovered the no-input mixer technique that I find so fun and inspiring. A brand new territory for me to explore. Again, I can easily use the sounds generated from this no input mixer for further manipulation and transformations. But, back to the favorite technique question, I can easily say that granular synthesis is by far my favorite way of creating sounds.
99Sounds: How can our visitors follow your work and do you have any similar releases they can check out?
Red Fog: I did the sound design in some projects like commercials, short films, and a few art installations, but this is my first true sound pack release. If people are interested, though, I have another experimental project called Sleeping On Lotus Ashes, that is purely focusing on acousmatic / electroacoustic music. And, of course, my drone ambient project Red Fog.

Drones contains 50 drone sound effects in 24-bit WAV format (44.1 kHz, stereo). No patches are included at the moment, although we’re planning to update the release with Kontakt and SFZ patches in the future.
The included sounds are organized into three folders: Atmospheric (16 samples), Minimalist (16 samples), Textured (18 samples). The demo track was composed by Dronny Darko (more info available in the SoundCloud description).
The included samples were crafted by Red Fog and are royalty free for use in your music, video game development, videos and other creative projects, both free and commercial. You are not allowed to redistribute these samples (as in share or sell them on other websites), nor use them as the sound source in audio related software and/or sound libraries, free or commercial.
